CareFree Italy - Campania
View all regionsCampania is more commonly known for the Amalfi coast but it is so much more. There is the oft forgotten but stunningly beautiful Cilento coast further south, the Sorrento peninsular and the gulf of Naples. Amalfi, Praiano and Positano are all well known but the cliff hugging smaller towns may not be. Views out over cupola topped churches and cotto roofed baptisteries to the sea beyond are truly memorable. Busy marinas bustle with life and are the main reason people come to this region.
Naples, the capital of the region, was one of the wealthiest cities in Italy in times past and its riches are still evident in many of the large palaces in the historical centre. Unusual inland towns like Benevento, Avellino, Capua and Caserta are often overlooked by the traveller for the more scenic coastal towns, which is a pity as this is a quiet rural region, mountainous in part and dotted with Roman, Greek, Byzantine and Spanish history. With a land known for its mozzarella, tomatoes, olives and lemons the diet is rich, healthy and extremely flavourful and if you are away from the coast, extremely cheap. Dining out is a must and as the pizza was invented here for Queen Margarita we feel that you ought to try at least one or two, in her honour.
Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum need no introduction as the archaeology of the region has been tied to the cycle of the volcano which has buried successive cities through the centuries. Souvenir shops are plentiful and apart from the bottles of limoncello (a local strong liqueur) there are plenty of other handicrafts that you can pick up in markets where haggling over the price is almost as common as in a north African souk? Neapolitans are loud, vivacious and proud of their heritage so expect a floorshow.
