Birthplace of pizza. Crazy drivers and Vespas laden with the cream of Italian youth weaving through endless traffic jams to a riot of beeping horns are well known.

The harbour of Santa Lucia has inspired generations of artists and musicians. With a history dating back over 3000 years successive earthquakes, destruction from Vesuvius and aggressive invasions from Rhodians, Ionians, Romans, Habsburgs, Spaniards, Austrians, French and Carthaginians it is a miracle that Napoli has thrived. Neapolis means new town and was originally founded by the Greeks. Favoured by Rome it managed to keep its distinctive identity until late into the imperial period. Buildings worth a visit include the Teatro San Carlo which is one of the largest theatres in Europe.

The church of San Francesco di Paola on the Piazza Trieste e Trento is an almost exact replica of the pantheon in Rome. Visit the Palazzo Reale for the statues, eight marble Neapolitan kings, a theatre, seventeen richly appointed state apartments and the priceless Biblioteca Nazionale. Castel Nuovo known as the residence of kings isn’t quite as splendid but was recently restored and has a richly decorated early Renaissance arch. Don’t miss the Piazza del Municipio, which has well tended gardens and is adjoined by the church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli. The church of San Domenico Maggiore gives its name to a piazza and is one of the most interesting in Napoli for its collection of 45 sarcophagi belonging to members of the house of Anjou. The patron Saint of Naples is San Gennaro and the cathedral bears his name. Naples due to its complicated history also has the honour of having the National museum of Archeology.
