Milano is one of the richest towns in northern Italy and has a much maligned reputation as being traffic clogged and fog bound for much of the year. While to a certain extent this is true, its location at the foothills of the alps and the affluence created through the ages had to leave some mark and despite these minor failings, the tree lined wide streets reminiscent of paris, the large piazzas, the incredible Duomo di Santa Maria Nascente (a cathedral easily the equal of any other in italy) and the friendly locals more than make up for that.
With a population close to 8 million people Milan made its money through the centuries by financing kings and emperors. Lombardy bankers were the richest in the world. Nowadays Milan is the Italian fashion capital with all the main designers competing to upstage each other with ready to wear high fashion collections designed for the rich and famous. The styles however filter through to our own high street about 6 months later. The word millinery comes from Milan, where mass production of hats was born.

Milan offers shoppers the chance to enjoy an elegant and refined city with one of the largest historical centres in Italy. no matter where you chose to stay, near the duomo, the central station or the parks area you are central. try to avoid the outlying commuter districts sych as asago or Milanofiori or Fiera as they are quite industrial and not at all appealing to look at.
Being the capital of its region, lombardy, leaving the city will bring you to an area well known for its spectacular lakes, try Como, Maggiore and the western coast of Garda. with the mountains as a backdrop never has there been so much natural wealth in one small area.
