CareFree Italy - Sardinia
View all regionsSardinia is a captivating island, a true mixture of all that the Mediterranean can offer from simplistic home-spun handicrafts to an exotic cuisine encompassing the best of French, Italian, Spanish, North African and Greek styles. Set in the most stunning rugged scenery of rocky mountains long golden beaches crystal clear waters and Mediterranean scrub. Similar to Sicily in that politically, culturally and linguistically speaking as far from Italy as it is possible to be and yet remaining so.
Known for many years as one of the most lawless places in Italy Sardinia is now one of the most sought after and jealously guarded secrets of the Italian holidaymaker and becoming rapidly popular with the British.
Historically speaking, Sardinia has been inhabited since the stone age, many diverse cultures including the Greeks, Mycenaean, Phoenicians and Carthaginians have left their mark since then with numerous monuments, tombs, and necropoli: the most stunning is at Anghelu Ruju near Sassari or those at Barumini. Sardinian holidays will have influences from all these civilisations. If you are looking for souvenirs, we recommend the fine silver and gold filigreed jewelry from Alghero and Bosa; carpets and rugs in the fine Tessitura Liscia (smooth weaving) tradition; pottery is practical and hand made although basket making and raffia work is more widespread. The bandit tradition extends to their metalwork and the quality of Sardinian knives is world renowned. In particular those from Santulussurgiu and Gavoi but any trip to Cagliari will give you a wider range at a better price. You might also wish to try the Cagliari Sunday market to haggle the price even lower.
Sardinian beaches are some of the best in the world and the Costa Smerlada (emerald coast) the pinnacle. But there doesn’t seem to be a single section of the island where there isn’t a stunning (and aside from August) empty beach: Porto Cervo, Villasimius, Capo Testa, Arbatax, Oristano, Isola Rossa. Take advantage of the no frills and scheduled direct flights to all of the Sardinian airports: Olbia, Alghero, Cagliari, Tortoli and relax in style rubbing shoulders with the rich and the obscenely rich!
