Umbria offers the world weary the perfect location to unwind. Great views, lovely people and well priced, well tended properties are what it means to be in Umbria. Perugia, the capital, is full of small boutiques and is a shoppers paradise. It also has the only external escalators in Italy as the hills were so steep and it made more sense to have them. Assisi is a centre for pilgrimage the world over and is a few short miles south of Perugia and well worth a trip.

The region is extremely rural and while each of the hill top towns basks in the sun, the gently rolling hills flower with poppies, vetch and wild thyme in May, fields burst with sunflowers in June, olive groves dot the hillsides and even one or two vineyards add a note of colour in the southern areas. Try the Sagrantino di Montefalco a red wine that is truly unique and won’t grow anywhere else, visit Torgiano and try the Rubesco. If it is good enough for the president and Berlusconi then it can’t be bad.

Ryanair now flies direct from the UK from Stanstead three times a week, But the fact that it is about 2hrs drive from most of the other airports should not put you off visiting. Spello has dozens of art galleries selling watercolours and oils at a variety of prices, medival Montefalco is known for its beautiful hand made linen, Solaio makes the worlds best Cashmere and for dining out hilltop Todi is outstanding. Orvieto with its etruscan catacombs and the famous white wine should appear on everyones itinerary . There are many other towns such as Gubbio, Foligno, Bevagna and Spoleto that have their own unique style and look and have been more popular with Romans seeking a secluded weekend retreat for decades.
