Few people realise that Venice is the capital of a whole region in Italy. Or that the towns which surround it offer everything from canal boat holidays to skiiing chalets. Verona, almost the birthplace of Opera has an incredible open air auditorium, we recommend you pay a little more and go for the better seats as 4 hours on a concrete bench can push anyone’s tolerances. Treviso has canals too, and is a stopping point for many people heading north to Belluno or Cortina for skiing. Many seasoned skiers will tell you that Italy offers better snow and better slopes than France often at a lower cost but simply doesn't want to brag about it. The Veneto loves its food and menus can seem a little daunting to those unused to such a wide and varied diet; snails, frogs, horse meat, game, fresh fish and hand made deserts feature in almost every menu. Festivals to celebrate a towns` speciality appear in season, of which the best is the cherry festival in Marostica. Wines from the Veneto such as Soave and Pinot Grigio are often missed by lovers of the sparkling Prosecco or the fiery spirit Grappa from Bassano. All the wineries organise wine tasting and most of them will be able to let you sample their wares before you buy so look out for the ''degustazione'' signs which means ''wine tasting''.

Shopping opportunities in the Veneto are best taken in the smaller towns. Places like Adria, Caorle, Mantova or Padova will be chaper than the more famous cities and offer an equally wide range for fashion conscious locals. A lot of sportswear is made in the industrial areas near Mestre and Vicenza and the 70% of the world’s fashion designers have their sunglasses made by Luxottica, who are also based in the Veneto. Worth remembering if you forgot to pack a pair.
