CareFree Italy - Venice
View all regionsVenice, la Serenissima, (the most serene) one of the world’s first republics, a water borne city connected to mainland Italy by a 3km bridge. A city of canals, seascapes, fantasy and art. Unique, romantic, breathtaking, no words are ever enough to describe this unforgettable experience. as you stroll arm in arm with the one you love over centuries old bridges, down secretive calle and alleys, the sound of lapping water is never far away. A gondolier could surprise you with his "OI OI boppeh" shout at any second, a pretty little shop selling hand made paper or tiny animals made from murano glass is just waiting to be discovered. Even if you have been to Venice a dozen times you will always discover something new to amaze and delight.
First-time visitors may be surprised to find that Venice is not a large city and quite accessible by foot. Stroll through the little Piazzas, alleyways and back streets climb over some of the 400 bridges and discover your own Venice with shops, bars, family run trattorias and real Venetian characters. Each with a charm all of its own, Venice calls to the heart and soul like no other place on earth. Anyone who doesn't fall in love the first time is probably travelling alone!
Use waterbuses and water taxis to get about the six districts and 122 islands formed by about 150 canals set in a shallow coastal lagoon. Try the lido for its beaches, Murano for the glass factories, Burano for lace. each island has an individual character and often a single production whether it be a liquer or simply an orchard. guide books for Venice skim the surface but can't convey the unique atmosphere.
This is a city where the musei ebraico, the Guggenheim art gallery and the teatro la Fenice rub shoulders with hotels, residences, beaches and a world famous casino. A city where there is a real passion for life and a sense of civic pride unmatched by any Italian pretender. Venice is responsible for many world firsts, the first republic, the first pair of spectacles and the largest mercantile marine empire the world has seen. Marco Polo was sponsored by a Venetian Doge and so Venice ultimately brought pasta to Italy.
